"We use gaffe tape in a corporate meeting room environment. The tape is generally applied to Berber office carpet. It is typically in place for 3-24 hours. In our tests we found that the Permacel tapes far outperformed the competition. The P-665 rated the highest at a perfect 10. The adhesive was very strong with no residue. It tore straight with no strings. Many of the other brands tear at weird angels, sometimes at a 30 degree angle, and many had issues with strings; the P-665 was perfect in this regard. The P-672 did have some strings and a minimal amount of residue. One advantage that the P-672 had was the firmness of the tape. All of the other tapes were very thin. In the end, I would first buy the Permacel P-665, followed by the Permacel P-672. "Unfortunately I didn't get to test any of the tape, the tape was used by our church VBS director to decorate our auditorium in black plastic for a "space" theme. She didn't know to pay attention to the different roll numbers for the test.
She said all the tapes worked well but there were some that tore better than others.

"I have found that the best gaff for cable applications is the more pliable type, with a good adhesive. Stiffer tapes tend to curl and peel away from the adhered surface more, and are less likely to maintain hold when disturbed or used in high traffic areas. I typically use "Entertainment Industry Tape" (my favorite) or Pro-Gaff which comes through my lighting supplier, and was somewhat surprised to see that some of the tapes offered here performed better at a lower price point.
I was somewhat disappointed at what is considered "professional" or "premium" grade tape; the cheaper stuff seems to outperform it nearly every time. Also, NAT 616 seems to hold like a post-it note; too bad that it's the only gaff tape offered that has a black backing as well as face." - Greg Bennett, Master Electrician, HSI Production Services
"The more extreme tapes:
* Scapa 125 comes off the roll tenaciously yet removes far too easily from plastic surfaces.
* Shuretape PC-628 is very difficult to unroll and as expected has the strongest adhesive of all; but it did leave residue after three days. This is a great tape for anything that will not require removal later.
* Shurtape P-672 unrolled quite easily and yet it is very strong and difficult to remove, tough to tear too. Very stiff backing.
My First Choice Is:
* Pro-Gaff tape was in my opinion middle-of-the-road or better in all categories that I evaluated which allows it to cover most all application I use tape for and do so with without undue difficulty.
Areas I evaluated are:
-Easy of pay-out
-Firm-ness or body of backing
-Tear-off ease.
-Removal after three day from plastic and rubber jacketed cables.

"I use tape to conceal brand names on photo equipment when traveling abroad to make them look less appealing to thieves. The JVCC is my favorite because it has a unique finish that matches the matte finish on my cameras almost perfectly. It looks almost indistinguishable, which I like, but it defeats the purpose of making them look "ragged!" So I add some PC-628, which is more apparent and looks more like "tape" that is holding broken bits together. I like the JVCC because the adhesive sticks but is easily removed and repositioned. The PC-628 has a much firmer grip and isn't as easy to remove. I wrapped my white Canon 70-200 in the PC-628 and it looks like a piece of junk that nobody in their right mind would think is valuable -- absolutely perfect for traveling through sketchy areas." - Jim Nanners, Jim Nanners Photography
"My primary ranking criteria was how "how well did the tape adhere." We have a carpeted stage and some of the tape didn't stick very well (as well as tape that I've purchased in the past). But I was able to find a few types that worked great.

"They all performed as expected. I am partial to permacel as I have used it for years. It is a bit pricey compared to Pro-Gaff. Citing both do everything fantastic I will lean to the lower price Pro- gaff. I have never used the Scapa. I rated it slightly lower as it fell a bit short on adherence. But if that is all I had I would not turn it away.
I photo assist and do a little of my own work (photography commercial, catalogue). What ever brings a paycheck.
